    How to use the generator

    1. Pick a style. Choose cool, funny, aesthetic, short, OG, fantasy, PvP or survival. Not sure yet? Leave it on Mix.
    2. Add a word if you want one. Type something like wolf or ember and the names are built around it.
    3. Press Generate names. Open Fine-tune to set length, numbers, underscores and letter case.
    4. Copy or save. Press Copy on a name you like, or Save to keep it in your list. Click any name to see it on the nametag.

    What each option does

    Length

Set the shortest and longest name you want. Very tight ranges, like exactly five characters, leave fewer names to choose from.

    Numbers and underscores

Automatic adds them to some names depending on the style. You can also turn them off, or use them on every name. The underscore is the only symbol Java Edition allows.

    Letter case

Choose mixed case, all lowercase or all uppercase. Automatic picks what suits the style, for example soft lowercase for aesthetic names.

    Look-alike numbers

This swaps up to two letters for numbers that look similar. Names stay readable, but they can be harder to type.

    Minecraft username rules

These are the rules for Java Edition. Everything the generator makes follows them.

    RuleWhat it means
    Length3 to 16 characters.
CharactersLetters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9, and the underscore. No spaces, dots, dashes or symbols.
Capital lettersAllowed and shown as you type them. Do not count on capitals alone to make a name unique.
UniqueEach name belongs to one account, so a name may already be taken.
Changing itYou can change a Java name later, but Mojang limits how often.
Bedrock EditionUses an Xbox gamertag with its own rules. Keeping a name to 12 characters or fewer is the safest choice.

Check before you commit. NameAnvil can’t see which names are taken. Look up your favorite in your Minecraft profile or launcher first.

Tips for a name you will keep

    • Say it out loud. If your friends can’t say it, they can’t tag you in chat.
    • Keep it readable. Names of 8 to 12 characters are easy to read on a nametag and in chat.
    • Keep personal details out. Skip your real name, school, city and birth year.
    • Be careful with look-alikes. Letters like I and l, or O and 0, are easy to mix up. Use the number-swap option lightly.
    • Don’t copy someone else. A name that imitates another player or a well-known creator can get you into trouble on servers.
    • Save backups. Keep three or four favorites in case your first choice is taken.

    Frequently asked questions

Are the usernames on this page available?

NameAnvil can’t check whether a name is taken. It builds names from word lists, and Minecraft names are unique, so any name might already belong to someone else. When you find one you like, check it in your Minecraft profile or launcher before you commit. Saving a few favorites gives you backups.

Is the Minecraft username generator free?

Yes. It is free, there is no sign-up, and you can generate as many names as you like.

Do these names work on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition?

Every name follows Java Edition rules, so they fit Java accounts. Bedrock Edition players use a Microsoft account and an Xbox gamertag, which has its own rules. Names of 12 characters or fewer are the safest choice there. Check the gamertag rules when you set yours up.

Why can’t I add spaces or symbols?

Java Edition only allows letters, numbers and the underscore. That is why the generator never makes spaces, dots, dashes or special characters. The underscore is the only separator it can use.

How does the “word to include” option work?

Type a word like wolf or ember and the generator builds each name around it. You can place the word at the start, at the end, or let the tool choose. The word can use letters and numbers only, and it has to fit inside your length limit.

How many different names can it make?

The word lists and patterns make more than 100,000 word combinations, and far more once you add numbers, underscores and letter case. Most batches are all new. You may see repeats if you pick a very narrow length range, because fewer words fit.

Can I change my Minecraft username later?

On Java Edition you can change it from your Minecraft profile, but Mojang limits how often. Pick a name you will be happy to keep for a while.

    Are my saved names private?

Yes. Saved names and your last settings live in your browser on your device. They are not sent to us, and they stay until you clear your browser data. The Cookies Policy lists exactly what is stored.

A name looks odd or offensive. What should I do?

Every name is checked against a blocked-word list, but no filter is perfect. If a name appears that should not, tell us on the contact page and we will fix the word lists.
